Apple picking is here!  This is one of my favorite food times of year....apples, pumpkins, squash are all rich in flavor and health benefits.  Some of the latest research shows that an apple a day may really keep the doctor away and unwanted health conditions at bay.  IDEA Fitness Journal outlines that apples are a great source of fiber which may help to reduce the risk of certain cancers and heart disease.  Apples contain 3 grams of fiber, mostly pectin which helps reduce cholesterol, and some insoluble fiber which helps keep our digestion system running smoothly.  Remember, the recommended daily intake is 25-30 grams of fiber.  The crunchy fruit also is rich in antioxidants like Vitamin C and may has been shown to help with weight loss.  Nutrition Journal reports that apples were most consistently associated with reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma, and type II diabetes when compared to other fruits and vegetables and other sources of flavonoids. Apple consumption was also positively associated with increased lung function and increased weight loss. One study showed that women eating three apples a day for 12 weeks lost an average of 2.7 pounds.

When picking apples, avoid those with bruises and look for apples that still have their stems.

Avoid storing early-harvest apples in cool place.  They are best used for canning or drying.  Note that storing apples does not negatively affect antioxidant levels.  Later varieties can be kept in cold storage for months.  Also, do not store apples next to turnips, potatoes or cabbage.  If you do, you may notice your spuds sprouting!

Get in the habit of eating apples this fall and keep it up throughout the year!
