We are entering the time of year traditionally filled with fun, yet stressful, shopping, family gatherings, holiday parties, writing cards and decorating.  How do you know if you have gone further than the occasional Ba Humbug grumbling and need some time off to recuperate?  Author Diane Mapes gives us a list of thing of traits to look for in ourselves.  Constant stress can suppress our immune systems, affect our relationships and decrease productivity on the job.  We should all be aware of when we need to take time off, seek out a new job if we are feeling unsatisfied or shift priorities to make our health come first.  If you have three characteristics from the top list or any from the bottom list, it is time to give yourself a break!

List #1

  • Feelings of dread, depression or anxiety about having to go to work
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Forgetfulness
  • Clumsiness/Accident prone
  • Increased alcohol consumption
  • Ignoring or snapping at people you care about
  • Apathetic Attitude towards things you once cared about

List #2

  • Increased absenteeism
  • Low job performance or satisfaction
  • Cynicism about your colleagues or boss

Some great ideas to recharge and avoid burnout from Diane Mapes article in Health Magazine include the following:

  • Plan a vacation and do all of your favorite things- hiking, biking, relaxing
  • Re-connect with family and friends for lunch or coffee.  Talking with loved ones can help you figure out the cause of burnout.
  • Take a break and stay in town.  Sometimes a beach can provide an escape, but not what is needed to reflect on your life.  Do not plan anything….wake up and go with the flow!  When was the last time you did that?
  • Help others.  Some great websites:  www.globeaware.org, www.volunteeradventures.com, www.globalvolunteers.org, www.americanhiking.org.
  • Finally, if you want a career change, spend some time shadowing those who are already doing your dream job.  Check out Author Katy McColl’s Should I Do What I Love? Book and read inspiring interviews from those living their dreams.
