I have reported before on the benefits of coffee, but felt compelled to inform you of the latest positive research.  Coffe normally gets a bad wrap, but apparently there are even more reasons that you do not need to kick the habit.

According to O Magazine, much of the research that originally thought coffee contributed to heart disease, cancer and osteoporosis was flawed.  Apparently lifestyle associations were not taken into consideration during early research.  Now, however, science is convinced that coffee can do a body good.

Lauren Dzubow of O Magazine reports these fascinating findings.

1.  In 2005, coffee was the number ONE source of antioxidants in the American diet.  This ranks well above wine, chocolate, tea, fruits and vegetables.
2.  In 2006, research involving more than 27,000 women showed that 1-3 cups of java per day can help reduce your risk of heart disease.
3.  In 2005, a study of 90,000 people in Japan demonstrated that daily coffee drinkers have 1/2 the rate of liver cancer compared with non-coffee drinkers.
4.  At high risk for liver diseases like alcohol-related cirrhosis?  Grab a cup of coffee to reduce your risks.
5.  I was most surprised to read that coffee is a decent source of soluble fiber.  It has more fiber than wine or orange juice.  One study in 2002 following 80,000 women found those drinking 4 or more cups per day had 25% less risk of gallstones compared to those drinking no coffee.
6.  Coffee can help your mind stay sharp as it increases your ability to focus attention, be more alert and enhance your short term memory.  Reserach is also showing some protection against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease for regular cofee drinkers.
7.  There is also evidence that coffee can help keep colon cancer at bay, lower your risk of diabetes and reduce muscle soreness post-exercise if two cups are consumed pre-exercise.

Now if you are like me and do not like coffee all that much to begin with, do you need to pick up the habit?  No.  You can get many of these same benefits by comusming a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains.  Try to stick with no more than 4 cups of day and scale back if you cannot fall asleep at night.  If you are a coffee lover, raise your mug and drink up!
