Sunday, September 30th People of all ages seem to love wearing Crocs shoes. With the company's new styles, toddlers, kids, teens and adults all have plenty of options to chose from. They are comfortable, have a decent arch support, boast a huge variety of colors and are easy to keep clean. Are there any negatives to these shoes? Yes. A recent warning on the news might make you think twice about letting your kids wear their Crocs while they use escalators. According to News-Medical.Net, " It seems the
soft, lightweight, plastic clogs which are made from synthetic resin,
are easily caught in the cracks of an escalator and children as young
as 2 years have suffered serious toe and foot injuries as a result". Some major transport centers are starting to post warning signs nearby escalators to warn parents of the dangers of wearing soft shoes. Not just Crocs have led to this problem, accidents can happen with any soft shoe (like flip flops). The first I heard of this Crocs warning was earlier this month when four year old Rory McDermitt of Virginia had his shoe caught in an escalator. His mom pulled him to safety, but Rory ended up losing most of his big toe nail. Ouch! His mom wondered how this had happened and it was not until she got to the hospital and the doctors started asking questions about what kind of shoes he was wearing. Dave Lacrosse who monitors the 588 escalators in Washington's subway system says he is "skittish of Crocs and other soft-soled shoes and tells his children not to wear them either." He recommends that children wearing Crocs or other soft shoes take the elevator instead of the escalator. If you must ride the escalator with your child, the safest place for them to be is in the center of the escalator (the side is a common place for shoes to get caught in the cracks). Make sure children step over the teeth at the end of the escalator, too. The bottom line....kids, Crocs and escalators are not a good combination!
