Dear Diary, do I really need to keep writing down what I am eating every day?  Are you really helping me to lose weight or is this a waste of time?  Maybe I should be writing more meaningful things than how many cups of Kashi cereal I ate today?

Well, I would keep plugging away in that food journal if I were you.  No, it is not totally necessary, but research does show that the act of writing your daily food consumption does help!  Why?  Most of us cannot recall everything we ate in a day.  We often have selective memory when it comes to that afternoon candy bar or soda.  By writing down all that you consume, you will be able to get an honest account of your calorie consumption.  Remember those genes we inherited from mom and dad that determined the amount of calories we need to consume for weight loss?  If you are trying to lose weight, you will drive yourself crazy by not accurately accounting for how much you ingest.  Calories in must equal calories out.  You need to know the numbers!!  Weighing yourself daily or weekly has also been a successful tool for losing weight.  Check out www.myfooddairy.com to easily track your daily food consumption/exercise if you want an online tool.

You know yourself best, though.  If you can maintain a healthy weight with good eating habits, you may not need to log your food daily.  Decide what is best for you!
