Are you still confused about nutrition labels? Do you wonder which bread to pick when all the labels shout a different benefit like whole grain, added fiber, gluten free, added minerals and vitamins, omega-3 or filled with flax? Forget it when it comes to cereals, right?! You can find the answer of what product to chose, but you will need to carefully analyze every label and ingredient and brush up on your math skills.
Dr. David L. Katz, MD, medical consultant for ABC News, to the rescue. He is working with top nutritionist scientists throughout North America to develop something called the Overall Nutritional Quality Index or ONQI. As reported in O Magazine, Katz and his researchers have looked at foods based on 30 different nutrient factors, like fiber, vitamins and calories, and assigned them a number from 1 to 100. The closer the food rating is to 100, the healthier. Look for the ONQI tags in front of products so that you can make the most nutritious choice. Several supermarket chains will be unveiling ONQI in March 2009. Please check the ONQI website to see if it will be coming to a supermarket near you!
