Tuesday, July 10th Researchers have discovered yet another great reason for all of us to start exercising or keep exercising. Individuals participating in just 30 minutes of moderate to intense physical activity per day will help to ward off Parkinson's disease by 40%! The study was conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health with Evan L. Thacker as the lead author of the study. The details of the study were printed in Tufts Healthletter. Over 64,000 men and close to 80,000 women who were in the Cancer Prevention Study II Nutrition Cohort were followed for the study. Participants reported their activity level over the course of the study and after adjusting for age, gender, smoking or other potential Parkinson's risk factors, the authors concluded that moderate to vigorous exercisers lowered their risk of Parkinson's disease by 40% compared to sedentary subjects. The study did not, however, prove that exercise could help those who already have Parkinson's. Even though the study did not prove that exercise can help, rest assured that exercise can be helpful in improving physical performance and activities of daily living (as reported by the Clinical Journal of Sports Medicine in 2006). Get up and get moving. But remember, no flip flops (see my latest blogs) for your moderate walks around the block!
