Hot Pi-Lattes

I still chuckle when people ask me if pilates is some sort of food or beverage to drink.  It sounds a lot like latte so I thought I should write about one of my favorite drinks.  The most likely place for buying lattes is at Starbucks (there are on just about every corner) so I will focus on nutrition information there.  Starbucks has finally put nutrition information for the entire menu online.  If only their menu boards inside the restaurant listed caloric content so we could all make healthier choices.  In general, there are a few things you can do when chosing drinks to save calories.  Skip the whip cream and save yourself a whopping 120 calories and 7 grams of saturated fat!  You can also order your drinks unsweetened and use Splenda (0 calories) or sugar packets (10 calories) to sweeten to your own liking.  Finally, chose a nonfat milk and save saturated fat and 50-100 calories if the chain uses whole milk and 40-60 calories if the chain normally uses 2% milk.  A 16 oz beverage with soy milk has about 50 more calories than the same beverage with nonfat milk.  Every wonder just how much caffeine comes in your java?  You will get about 130 milligrams of caffeine in every 8 oz of coffee and 65 mg in every 1 oz shot of espresso.

Here are your best bets at Strabucks: (16 oz. servings unless noted)

Coffee (regular and decaf)     10 calories

Espresso (2 oz)                   20 calories

Caffe Americano                  20 calories

Iced Caffe nonfat                 100 calories

Iced Caffe soy- 12 oz            90 calories

Cappuccino soy tall- 12 oz    100 calories

Cappuccino, nonfat               100 caloires

Espresso Macciato, any milk (2oz)   20 calories

Shaken Green or Black Iced Tea  80 calories

Shaken Passion Iced Tea            80 calories

*What not to pick off the menu......all of the frappuccinos (except the regular coffee choice) come in over 400 calories and at least 9 grams of saturated/trans fats.  The hot chocolate weights in at 450 calories and 14 grams of saturated/trans fats- yikes!  A white chocolate mocha has 510 calories and 17 grams of satruated/trans fats.
