Ok, so I realize that I just spent my last blog this week delivering all the good news about consuming chocolate on account of its health benefits. Did you read the fine print about eating chocolate in moderation? Hopefully you got the message, but if you did not, this next morsel of information may suck the romance out of your chocolate splurge. According to Charles Stuart Platkin, who compiled the book The Diet Detective's Count Down, to burn off the calories from an eight-piece box of Valentine's Day chocolates, you will need 69 minutes of running, 80 minutes of swimming, 92 minutes of biking, 111 minutes of dancing, 169 minutes of walking and 223 minutes of yoga. That is a lot of OM for just a small little box of MMMM. The book contains more than 7,500 foods, their caloric amount along with a breakdown of how long it will take you to swim, electric slide or Upward Dog those calories away. You may think twice about eating something that will "cost" you 2 hours of biking. On the other hand, you may find that piece of cake is worth the extra minutes on the treadmill!
Another trick to keep your portions in check is to stick to the right serving sizes. How do you stick to portion sizes when you are out to lunch with co-workers? What the heck does 3 ounces look like anyways? Keep this handy list from Health Magazine that uses everyday items from you purse to estimate portion sizes.
Cell phone= 1 six ounce serving of yogurt
Ring of car keys= 1 serving potato chips
Checkbook= 1 three ounce serving of grilled fish
Change Purse= 1 (1/2 cup) serving of fruit
Gift card= 1 serving of vegetables (medium potato)
5-piece pack of gum= 2 (2 ounce) servings of cheese
Powder compact= 1 serving of grains or 1/2 a bagel
Box of Altoids= 1 (1 ounce) serving of almonds or walnuts
PDA= 1 (3-4 ounce) serving of protein
