With a few short weeks to New Years, some of you may be starting to consider your New Year's resolutions. I love this time of year where we have time to reflect (after all the holiday shopping and cards) and consider what adventures we want in to undertake in the new year.  If you feel like you are too old to try a new career or an exercise program....remember that it is never too late!  Really, there is science to prove it is never too late!  Many people over 40 feel that starting an exercise program is a waste of time.  The good news is that inactive people who start exercising later in life can still significantly cut their chances of developing coronary artery disease (CAD) according to the July online edition of Heart.  Although people who have been active their whole lives have the lowest risk of CAD, those becoming very physically active after age 40 were about 55% less likely to be diagnosed with CAD compared to inactive people in their demographic.  Those active throughout their life were 60% less likely to be diagnosed with CAD, only a 5% difference!   Just like cardiovascular benefits are observed at any age you start exercising, the same holds true for strength training.  It is especially important for women in menopause to engage in some bone building exercise 1-2 times per week.  With the loss of estrogen and increased risk for osteoporosis, it is imperative to start strength training if it is not already part of you life.  So......dust off your shoes, write yourself some new fitness goals and get moving into the new year!
