Journaling Into The New Year

I have always debated about whether to write a journal.  There is definitely power in journaling as it gives you an open page to "talk" freely about life, work, relationships and so much more.  The simple act of writing can be a profound way for us to analyze or reflect on finding balance, perspective, gratitude and direction.  Finding ways to slow down, like writing and reflecting, are great tools to decrease stress, too.

If you do want to keep a journal for yourself or start documenting some of your children's funny moments or special events, follow these tips from IDEA Fitness Journal and author Kate Larsen:

1.  Decide what part of your life to keep in your journal...personal, professional or biographical information.

2.  Try to find a writing place that is relaxing and allows you to concentrate.

3.  Set aside 10 minutes to write in your journal even if it is not an ideal spot.  You can jot down a note and write more later, too.

4.  There are several workshops and books that teach about journal writing.  Try www.journaltherapy.com or www.intensivejournal.com

5.  Be honest about what you write, but avoid critiquing your work.

6.  Find a writing journal that appeals to you with paper/design that you like.  Acid free or archival paper will last longer and look for great pens.

7.  Enjoy the process of writing.  There are no judges to critique your work...just your clarity on life and a way for you to determine direction and reduce stress.

This simple 10 minute exercise a day could make for a much less stressed, focused and purposeful 2007.  Enjoy!
