Many people with knee pain fear that doing additional exercise will worsen their condition. As a result, these individuals often do very little or no exercise. Older, overweight individuals with knee osteoarthritis are very tentative to jump into the gym. IDEA Fitness Journal reports that recent research suggests regular, moderate exercise will not exacerbate the onset of osteoarthritis of the knee in older individuals even if they are overweight.
The study published in the Arthritis & Care Research journal did not confirm that exercise has a protective effect against knee osteoarthritis. Instead, the study showed that it is safe for overweight senoirs to maintain their activity levels without worry of hastening the onset of knee osteoarthritis. This is great news as these individuals are often the people that need exercise the most! The study was quite thorough- over 10 years of researchers from Boston Unviversity observing the physical activity levels of 1,300 men and women from Massachusetts and the incidence of knee osteoarthritis. All participants were 53 years or older at the start of the study and mostly walked as their main form of exercise. If you know someone or have a client that is worried about knee osteoarthritis, encourage them to keep moving. It will help with weight maintenance and will not make matters worse!
