Leave The Dirty Dishes

If you are like me, I like to clear the dirty dishes from the table right away.  I really dislike being at a restaurant that takes forever to clear your dirty dishes, too.  I know, so anal!

Well according to the Perceptual and Motor Skills journal, individuals wanting to lose weight may want to keep those dirty dishes lingering at the table a little while longer.  Nutrition Action Healthletter gives us details about the study published in the journal.  The study was quite interesting....it took place at an all-you-can-eat sports bar (definitely not the best place for weight management).  The study researchers randomly assigned 50 graduate students to 21 different tables and served them chicken wings.  Some of the tables were assigned a waiter/waitress to remove the chicken bones while the other tables were not bussed leaving the chicken bones on the table.  In the end, the students at the unbussed tables ate only 5 1/2 wings, while the students at the bussed tables ate an average of 7 wings.  While the difference is not huge, there is something to be said for eating less because you have a reminder in front of you of how much you already ate.  The bottom line is to keep your dishes, empty food containers, casserole dishes and any other food cues around to help remind you how much you have consumed.  By the way, lingering dirty dishes had a bigger impact on men than women.

Unfortunately, you will still have to do the dishes sooner or later though......
