Life Is A Bowl Of Cherries

Ahhhh, as summer sets in, life does seem like a bowl of cherries.  Warmer weather, outdoor acitivities and hopefully less work make the next three months the best time of the year.  Could that little bowl of cherries be the next dieter's dream?  Some claim that eating cherries can help you shed pounds.  What is the real truth? 

Well, according to Health magazine, there is some truth to this claim.  A recent study at Michigan State University looked at mice on a high fat diet that lost weight after being fed the anthocyanins in cherries.  In case you were wondering, anthocyanins are the pigments that are found in cherries.  What a funny thought to picture mice taking turns eating cherries out of a bowl at the summer picnic.  Well, the mice did not actually eat the whole cherry, just the anthocyanin compound.  The small, but powerful compound did help the mice lose weight!  But, before you get too excited, the amount that the mice ate for weight loss would be equivalent to humans eating a pound of cherries.  Unfortunately, that would be way too many calories and sugar to still provide any weight loss benefit. 

Director of the study, Muraleedharan Nair, PhD, is hoping that the cherry could still be very helpful for dieters.  He is currently working on an anthocyanin supplement. 

Until then, head for the sun, eat a few cherries and enjoy life!
