Marathon Madness

In honor of the New York City marathon held today, I thought I would write today about an interesting new product to help you refuel on your next athletic endeavor.   The race included 39,085 runners at the start and this year race officials were trying to enforce a ban on headphones due to insurance liability.  The new rule was received well by elite runners, but not so well by the thousands that count on music for motivation and concentration.

Whenever I watch people competing it gives me the bug to want to do something.  Now that I am pregnant, I am focusing on letting my body run it's own little marathon over the next couple of months.  Let's not forget to mention that the woman's winner of today's race just had a baby in January and she was running competitively twelve days later.  Something tells me I will still be in a baby fog at twelve days post baby and not ready to hit the roads running.  Kudos to you, Paula Radcliffe!

To help you reach the finish line of your next race, consider trying the Enlyten SportStrips.  These handy, compact strips look just like Listerine Breath Strips yet have the benefit of gatorade's fuel replenishing power.  These little guys can fit easily in a pocket or sports bra and simply dissolve in your mouth giving you essential vitamins and minerals that have been lost through sweating.  Besides the compact size, the other benefit is that these strips will not make your mouth sticky like some of the sports drinks or gels.  Some consider the gels a little cumbersome and dislike the taste.  As with any product, make sure you test the product out during your training and not the day of the big race.  The strips will run you $9.99 for 54.  The website listed above is full of information and endorsements by athletes.  The company's tag line is "The Athlete's Advantage.  Fast, Efficient, Effective".  This year's Chicago marathon officials should have passed these out to everyone considering the un-seasonably warm weather and early race stop.  When the race was stopped, more than 250 runners had been taken to the hospital.  I think these strips are a worthy investment!
