Friday, April 4th Finding time to meditate may be even more important for the aging population. A regular practice of quiet meditation may help protect brain tissue and decrease the cognitive decline associated with aging according to the journal Neurobiology of Aging as reported by IDEA Fitness Journal. A study was conducted by researchers from Emory University, in Atlanta, to determine the affects of meditation on the brain's attentional ability and brain tissue. The control group had 13 individuals while the meditation group had 13 individuals with over 3 years of meditation experience. The study results indicated that the control subjects had a normal decline in their performance on attention tests and an age-related loss of brain tissue volume. Surprisingly, the meditation subjects did not show the same brain tissue loss or attention decline as the control group. Even MRI scans of the meditation group revealed that the meditators had more gray matter. The increased gray matter was found in an area of the brain that is associated with attentional processing. Not only does meditation improve our mind, it helps to reduce stress, improves immune activity and assists with autonomic regulation.
I know it is easier said than done, but try to find even a few minutes during the day during which you can sit quietly, focus on your breath and clear your mind of all thoughts. Be present in the moment and be open to the possibilities and gifts that lie within those moment of silence.
