Recently, one of my clients had a back spasm and called to cancel her workout.  While I always honor people's decision to skip a workout due to pain, I never encourage clients to skip their workout for an extended period of time.  I think there is a general confusion as to whether you should rest when back back pain strikes or try working through the pain.  As reported by Health Magazine, Robert Monsey, MD, a spine surgeon and associate professor of orthopedics and rehabilitation at the University of Vermont, has some solid answers to help clear the confusion.

Dr. Monsey recommends that if back pain strikes and it is really bothering you, listen to your body and relax.  It is best to skip the gym for a couple of days and try lying down on your back with a pillow under the knees to support your back.  BUT, do not rest on your back for more than 48 hours!  This will further weaken your back and prevent a speedy recovery.  Once you are feeling better, try some low impact exercises like walking, Pilates or swimming.  Dr. Monsey stresses that Pilates is so important as we age because we are more prone to back injuries after age 38.  Aging discs, muscle and nerve problems along with obesity are all reasons to keep maintain strong abs to support the back.  A regular Pilates routine is crucial to our body's overall health and injury prevention!

If your back pain persists beyond 48 hours, you have fallen or have a history of cancer, check with your doctor to see if you need to see a back specialist or physical therapist.

Bottom Line: Hit the floor if you feel the need to rest, but get up within 48 hours and get moving to speed your recovery!
