Phelps + Crazy Calories= Gold!

Wednesday, August 13th Looking at Olympic swimmer, Michael Phelps, you would never guess that he consumes a whopping 12,000 calories a day. That is about six times as much as the average adult daily intake!! So far he has collected an impressive five gold medals in Beijing and he may be able to compete for number 6 with another sport, Olympic eating. It sounds crazy to me to be able to consume that amount of calories without a stomach ache or cramps during his five hours a day training, six days a week. According to the Wall Street Journal, Phelps consumes the following each day: Breakfast: Three fried-egg sandwiches loaded with
cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, fried onions and mayonnaise. Two cups of
coffee. One five-egg omelet. One bowl of grits. Three slices of French
toast topped with powdered sugar. Three chocolate-chip pancakes.
Lunch: One pound of enriched pasta. Two large ham
and cheese sandwiches with mayo on white bread. Energy drinks packing
1,000 calories.
Dinner: One pound of pasta. An entire pizza. More energy drinks. Did you see any fruits or vegetables on the above list? Hmmmm......hard to argue with a guy that has lots of gold hanging around his neck. I guess the food has to be enjoyable for him to eat it on a daily basis and have enough calories. It would be hard to sit down to eat a pound of tofu everyday. For someone like Phelps, who burns a massive amount of calories during training, he needs to worry about consuming enough calories. Don't try this diet at home unless you plan on picking up Olympic level training as your hobby.
