A recent study published in the Bulletin of the NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases provides good news for patients undergoing hip and knee replacements. A Pilates program designed to help patients undergoing joint replacement surgery helped speed recovery! The protocol was designed by two reconstructive physicians and two Pilates professionals.
How did this program get developed in the first place? According to IDEA Fitness Journal, The physicians and Pilates instructors noted that patients were looking for alternative forms of rehabilitation as the anthroplasty prodecures have become less invasive and insurance is limiting the amount of physical therapy visits. The great benefit of Pilates is that it can be done both pre and postoperative. The preoperative phase is so important because the body's joints can increase their range of motion and the muscles can build memory and strength. It also promotes a whole body approach to therapy and the client/trainer relationship that develops is very valuable for postoperative recovery.
More research is needed to analyze the efficacy of Pilates in patient recovery from joint replacement surgeries. In the meantime, be sure to encourage anyone you know participating in a joint replacement surgery to take Pilates both before and after surgery. Make sure the Pilates professional (of course, Power Pilates is my preferred choice) is working with medicial personnel to establish an appropriate workout!
One more reason why I love Pilates.....no matter what life throws your way, Pilates will help!
