As an instructor that talks through about 5 hours of lessons or classes per day, I am always cautious of protecting my voice. What are the best ways for fitness professionals to save their voice? Here are some easy tips to keep your vocal cords as strong as the muscles you are working thanks to IDEA Fitness Journal.
1. Stay hydrated: the mucous membranes surrounding the vocal cords need to stay lubricated so they can vibrate effectively. 2. Cut out caffeine: the vocal cords can be dried out by drinking too much coffee, tea or soda. 3. Give up gum: swallowing often from too much gum chewing can dry out the throat. 4. Lose the menthyl lozenges: menthol is very drying to the throat. Try lemon flavored or sugar-free candies instead. 5. Avoid alcohol: just like caffeine, alcohol can dry out the vocal cords. 6. Soothe the symptoms: warm tea is a great way to soothe the throat. Try adding lemon or honey to a glass of warm water if you do not enjoy tea.
Along with these tips, the best workshop I have taken on how to properly use your voice is taught by Anne Brendle. She is a Power Pilates teacher trainer in Atlanta and has a great dephth of wisdom on how to proerly use your voice. Check the Power Pilates continuing education calendar for the latest dates on this workshop called Vocal Vitality.
