It's official....you can stop wondering whether you should pick paper or plastic when you shop at Whole Foods stores.  The store has decided to BAN use of plastic bags nationwide.  Customers will now have a choice between paper bags or reusable bags for 99 cents.

Apparently Whole Foods has been trying to figure out how to eliminate plastic bags for a while.  After introducing their reasonable 99 cent bags, A. C. Gallo, the company’s co-president and chief operating officer, said that customers finally caught on to the recycling trend.

Whole Foods has had success in banning plastic bags in their San Francisco, Toronto and Austin, TX locations.  The ban will take effect nationwide by April 22nd, Earth Day.  Just in time to eliminate the 150 million plastic bags the store distributes annually.  It sounds like most of the stores will have a plastic bag drop off site so that you can bring your old plastic bags for the store to recycle.

Environmentalists hope that other retailers will follow suit and eliminate plastic bags from their stores.  Despite that Whole Foods is a small retailer, several grocery stores have copied the store by improving their produce sections and offering more natural and organic options.  Let's hope they continue to follow Whole Food's lead!

Kudos to Whole Foods for taking this bold move.  It will certainly help reduce the use of petroleum to make the bags and free some much needed real estate in the landfills.  Maybe we can say goodbye to bags that end up floating into trees, rooftops, roadways and oceans.
