Super Subway

Subway is always ahead of the healthy curve.  Their latest bold move is to place caloric count of food items on their menu boards.  This change is taking place in the restaurant chain's New York City locations.  Thanks to a menu-labeling law in the big apple, other restaurants like Johnny Rockers, Auntie Anne's and Arby's will soon display their caloric count of all foods on their menu.  Not everyone is excited about the new law.  Large chains like McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and Dunkin' Donuts are fighting the law.

A press release issued back in December of 2006 stated that "the New York City Board of Health voted unanimously to require restaurants that make calorie information publicly available as of March 1, 2007".  The caloric information should be posted on menus and menu boards, where consumers can see it when they order.  It is estimated that this proposal will affect about 1 in 10 restuarants, not the entire city.

Wishing you lived in the big city so you could make better food choices?  Hang on, because word is that several other cities have similar menu-labeling laws in the works.  Otherwise, always check food chain restaurant websites or ask for a brochure with nutrition information so you can make great choices.
