Put that PB & J down!  Before you eat another peanut butter sandwich, make sure that your peanut butter will not put you at risk for salmonella.  After 300 people from 39 states were sickened with salmonella, ConAgra Foods advised consumers this past Wednesday to throw out their Peter Pan and Great Value Peanut Butter.  The company assures the public that they are putting consumer health as their top priority.  When checking the pantry for your jars, toss all Peter Pan and Great Value just to be safe.  If the Peter Pan  lid has a serial number beginning with 2111, you can return it to the company for a refund.

According to the Associated Press, the salmonella outbreak was linked to tainted peanut butter from a factory in Sylvester, GA.
Thankfully, there have been no deaths reported, but about 20 people have been hospitalized since August.  Investigators are still trying to determine how the salmonella got into the peanut butter.  This is the first series of cases to report salmonella coming from peanut butter in the United States.  Missouri, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia reported the highest number of cases.  Several lawsuits are underway based that individuals have suffered characteristic symptoms of salmonella like diarrhea, fever, dehydration, abdominal pain and vomiting.

Here is the information from www.ConAgra.com regarding a refund:

For a full refund, consumers must return the Peter Pan Peanut Butter or Great Value Peanut Butter product lid along with their name and mailing address to ConAgra Foods, P.O. Box 3768, Omaha, NE 68103.
Consumers with questions or concerns about the recall can call the 24-hour toll-free hotline at 866-344-6970. For more information about salmonella, visit www.ific.org.
