Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

How do I know if the classes I am taking are classical?

Simply start by asking your teacher if they teach classical or contemporary Pilates. As a point of reference, classical or “authentic” pertains to the name, movement and order in which the exercises are being taught, along with the vocabulary used to teach them. The progression of a session starts in a horizontal position and progresses to a vertical one (sitting or standing).

What if I can’t find a studio near me that teaches classical Pilates?

Doing some Pilates is certainly better than doing none at all. If you are unable to find a Power Pilates teacher near you, visit Power Pilates online store and order DVD's or downloads. We also offer specific products geared towards each course, such as Power Pilates Beginner Workout DVD (purchase at Store).

Where can I attain a basic knowledge of anatomy?

Power Pilates offers a workshop entitled “Basic Anatomy” (view dates here) as well as a downloadable version of this workshop (purchase at Store). You can also attend a local program near you.

What if I don’t pass the Mat Certification?

If you do not pass immediately after the weekend, you will have the opportunity to re-test within 3 months of the course. Use this opportunity to practice what you have learned, which will make you the best Pilates teacher you can be. One retest is included within the program fee.

What if I need more time to finish the Comprehensive or 12 Day Intensive program?

If you exceed the scheduled program times, (either 6, 9, or 12 months, depending on course location), you will be charged an additional $150.00 per month. Don't rush! Take the time you need to learn and process the information. Everyone has a different learning process. Honor your process.

What is the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA)?

The PMA was formed in 2000, partly in response to the court case in which the term "Pilates" was found to be a generic name and free for public use and misuse. The PMA's main goal is the development and administration of tests to help establish standards for Pilates training, competency and conduct.

What is the Pilates Method Alliance (PMA) exam?

The PMA exam evaluates your education for certification purposes. If you pass the exam you can call yourself PMA certified. The education you receive from Power Pilates apparatus training programs will enable you to qualify for taking the PMA exam. View a clear explanation on the exam here: (exam)

Are there payment plans?

Yes, for apparatus programs. (Comprehensive/Intensive/Bridge/System). Contact Power Pilates for more information info@powerpilates.com

Can I attend the certification programs in different cities?

Yes, Power Pilates offers training mat and apparatus programs at Affiliate & Host Training Centers worldwide. The quality and curriculum will not differ by location. We pride ourselves in offering a consistent, unified, worldwide program!

Is the Comprehensive program better than the System Training program?

Both programs are equal in terms of education. The structure/format of the curriculum is designed differently, but you will have the same results. Power Pilates would not offer a training program that did not meet our high standard of excellence.

Comprehensive: is a 6-12 month program, which includes Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced level exercises on all apparatus. There are approximately 96 in-class hours, 600 apprentice hours, and four main exams. This program requires the attendee to dedicate a concentrated period of time to the program.

System Training: is the Comprehensive program divided into three levels: Level 1 (Beginner/Beginner-Intermediate), Level 2 (Intermediate), and Level 3 (Advanced). It is designed for those who do not have the luxury of completing 600 apprentice hours, want to learn at a slower pace, take it one level at a time, or work full or part time. Each level has more in-class hours. Instead of completing traditional apprentice hours you complete self-study practice hours. You must be self motivated to thrive in this program.

Where do I begin?

Take Pilates mat and apparatus classes at your local Power Pilates Training Center. The prerequisite for all our teacher trainer programs is the Beginner Mat program. This is your starting point regardless of your level of training. During the Beginner Mat program, we explore more than the 18 beginner level exercises. We introduce Power Pilates Teaching Tools, "The Art of Teaching."
